The Challenge

In a nutshell:  fill over sand over gravel underlain by granite with shallow groundwater (that turned out to be flowing rapidly) – – – and a tight budget.

Simple Enough:  we proposed to install and test one pre-production hollow bar micropile.  Well, simple enough until we found the groundwater was flowing at such a rate to make containing the grout nearly impossible.

Our Solution

During the installation of the test hollow bar micropile we were able to drill and hammer through the overburden and maintain an open hole.  This allowed us to move to a more economical “Plan B” than the obvious threaded casing approach.  Instead we pre-drilled the micropile holes to completion depth, set less expensive standard pipe casing to isolate the flowing water, and completed the process with a traditional open-hole micropile process.

Fantastic test results and an economical alternative for the owner.
