Buffalo Trail Elementary
The Challenge
Oftentimes the challenge with any school project is the schedule – these projects must be started after school lets out in the spring and completed before school starts up again in the fall. With the structural slab replacement at Buffalo Trail, this urgency had no flexibility. This was a structural slab to replace a concrete slab on grade which had been pushed around by expansive soils for years. The slab supported all the external facility cabinets and electrical transformers, i.e. the school could not operate without this slab.
Prior work had been completed at Buffalo Trail with the successful use of micropiles. The project engineer elected to use this proven piling system to build a structural slab on micropiles and void to eliminate concern over future facilities movement.
Our Solution
This was a true coordinated project with the general contractor disconnecting and removing all services, conducting structural demolition, and excavating while DRS installed micropiles alongside in this tight area. The DRS micropiles were successfully load tested and turned over to the general contractor to complete the concrete work and utility restoration. Together we were able to maintain a tight project schedule and get Buffalo Trail back up and running for the fall school semester.
